On Wednesday, Lionel Messi third goal from a magic free kick sends Barcelona into the quarter-final. Since many games this year, Barcelona secured in the quarter-final of Copa del Rey as the holders defeat Athletic Bilbao at 3-1 to edge through 4-3.
Luis Suarez’s 100th FC Barcelona goal and Neymar’s penalty canceled out Athletic’s 2-1 first leg lead. However, Enric Saborit’s header six minutes into the second half had the tie headed for extra time.
But, as in the first leg and a 1-1 draw at Villarreal on Sunday, Messi carried to Barcelona’s save with another superb free kick that little inside of the post on its way past Gorka Iraizoz.
As per the reports, Suarez said to Barca TV “There is a reason why Messi is the best in the world. He surprises you with something beautiful in every game.”
FC Barcelona was under massive pressure to deliver their first win of the year since the mistake at Villarreal left them five points floating of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.
The 29-years-old striker of Spanish club FC Barcelona said that “It is important for our confidence. We wanted and needed a result like that. We are calm, working hard and know that the result will come.”
The game dominated by talks of controversial refereeing calls in the first leg as Athletic ended the game with nine men. There was more decisive on 26 minutes when Neymar was wrongly flagged offside as he set up Suarez for a tap in.
But, the same combination wasn’t to be denied 10 minutes before half-time when Neymar’s cross was hammered into the far corner by Suarez to bring up his Barcelona century. Saurez said, “The important thing is it contributed to us going through, which is what we wanted.”
A week after defeating the Athletic goalkeeper to his right, Messi free kick in off Iraizoz’s left-hand post for his 26th goal in 23 games this season.
FC Barcelona manager Luis Enrique said that “I am very satisfied. We controlled the game at every moment.”
Barcelona is going to join by Real Sociedad, Alaves and Alcorcon in Friday’s draw after they also secured their place the last eight on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Atletico Madrid moved into the last eight at 4-3 on aggregate although losing 3-2 at home to Las Palmas.
On Thursday, Real Madrid carries a comfortable 3-0 lead into the second leg of their tie away at Sevilla
